FAQs

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Virtually anyone of sound mind can be hypnotised to some degree if they want to be. The time taken to enter the trance state, and depth of trance achieved varies from person to person. Motivation and co-operation, along with focused attention on simple suggestions form the basis of a therapeutic partnership, in which the subject plays an active role. There are no bad subjects - only inflexible hypnotists (Milton H. Erickson)

Does the level of hypnotic trance matter?

One does not have to be in a deep state of hypnosis for the therapy to be effective. Some people are more suggestible than others. Suggestibility is not a constant and can vary, according to mood, environment and so on.

What does it feel like to be hypnotised?

Many people say that being hypnotised initially feels like drifting off into a light sleep. However, you are actually aware during the process, while often feeling very comfortable and relaxed. You hear what the therapist is saying and are able to respond, either verbally or physically.

Will I be aware of what’s happening?

You will be able to hear everything that is going on around you, while often being aware of having entered a very relaxed state, both mentally and physically.

Can I be made to do something against my will?

In Hypnotherapy, therapist and client work together as a team. Your subconscious mind will only accept suggestions that are of a beneficial nature. You cannot be made to do something that is against your morals or values, and remain in control at all times.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No. Trance is a natural state you’re in several times daily, returning to a normal state afterwards. When in trance, if you are tired, it is possible to drift off into a natural sleep, from which you can awake afterwards. It is possible to be in a hypnotic trance with your eyes open or closed, though the latter is more usual. You are able to open your eyes at any time, although you may be feeling so relaxed that you simply don’t want to.

Is hypnosis safe?

Trance is a completely natural state of mind. Hypnosis is a deliberately induced trance state into which a subject is led into by a third party, or which can be self-induced (self-hypnosis).

What is the difference between Regression and Past Life Regression?

Regression takes you back in this lifetime, whereas Past Life Regression takes you back to a previous lifetime or lifetimes.

What is the difference between Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy does not usually focus on a single problem and is about exploring feelings. There is no limit placed on the number of sessions.

Hypnotherapy usually deals with problems in the "here and now". Most hypnotherapists don't spend time analysing what happened in your childhood.

How many sessions will I need?

This is dependent on the individual and the nature of the problem. Hypnotherapy is a rapid therapy and many conditions can respond quickly. I expect the majority of my clients to notice changes within two sessions. The average for most conditions is around four to six sessions. Presenting problems such as Depression, Addictions, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), and Pain Control may need more.
